Maxi Skirts, Maxi Dresses for Summer, Maternity, Plus Size & Party

A maxi skirt is any skirt that is long- and by long we mean like to the ankle level. A lot of women wish to wear a maxi skirt, but they may not know how to coordinate it with a proper top. This is a valid apprehension.

Styling a maxi skirt can be a bit tricky because usually the shape of a maxi skirt is loose and flowy. While this is great if you wish to hide any extra flab on your mid section or thighs, it does pose a problem regarding what to wear on top. Here are some great ideas on how to wear a maxi skirt.

You can use these as inspirations for your own ensembles.

green maxi skirt paired with a brown top
This green maxi skirt paired with a brown top is a very nature inspired pallete. Needless to say it looks lovely! The maxi is in cotton fabric so its perfect for those days when you want to be comfortable yet chic. Since the length of the maxi is above the ankles, you can do a stylish shoe that can be visible. The horizontal lines in the skirt give a faux tiering in the maxi skirt that add dimension and interest to the outfit as a whole,

print blocking maxi skirt with white top
This is another unique print blocking look. This look demonstrates how a lightweight paisely print maxi skirt is worn with a bold striped top. The maxi skirt is light blue and white where as the top is black and white. These may seem like unusual combinations put together, but they do work. While most of us will not likely conceive this look, using this picture as a template, I am sure you can put together something similar. A bold shoe like the one worn with this maxi skirt also looks great.

amethyst purple skirt with neon green top
I personally love this outfit. The amethyst purple skirt is light and thin and the neon green top is bright and bold. The lightweight texture of the skirt is balanced out nicely by the heavy and bold look of the black leather jacket. The big chained in your face necklace completes the look.

light pink sheer pleated maxi skirt perfect for plus size
This light pink sheer pleated maxi skirt looks lovely and is a color that almost anyone can pull off. The plus size maxi dress for all kind of people, thin, fat, oversize. It's perfect when you are in your maternity period. The low cut of the black blouse is evened out by the well fitting blazer that covers the entire upper body. The blazer is the key supporting piece here since not only does it balance out the sheerness of the skirt, but it also provides balance in terms of shape. Add a nice pair of sandals and a oversize clutch and you are ready to go!

wine red maxi skirt
This outfit is a great demonstration of how one can mix three different colors into one outfit. The maxi skirt is a nice wine red. Yellow always looks good with red and this outfit takes advantage of that combination. The blue cardigan on top looks fantastic and these three colors create great visual interest for this ensemble. Even though its at tangent to the very "cotton-jersey- relaxed" feel of the outfit, the long chain delicate bag is an awesome addition.

polka dot long maxi skirt
You can be a part of the great polka dot trend, by adding a polka dot long maxi skirt to your wardrobe. In this case, the skirt is a sheer black with white polka dots. The top is a nice coral color with an oversized black bow at the neckline. You can do without a necklace here, because the bow itself is overpowering. This look definitely makes a statement, so if you are up for some attention - go for it !!

yellow sheer pleated chiffon maxi skirt paired with a lovely aquamarine color top
A yellow sheer pleated chiffon maxi skirt paired with a lovely aquamarine color top is an unusual color combination, but it looks amazing!! The pairing of these two colors is so unique that this concept itself will become the center of attention, and you won't need to do much more in terms of accessories.

a basic black maxi skirt with a white silk blouse
IF you are one of those gals who loves to wear black, then this one is for you- a basic black maxi skirt with a white silk blouse. Effortless, chic - yet so very put together. You can add a nice cuff or some chunky bracelets to transform this into a modern ensemble.

blue maxi skirt paired with a leopard print cardigan
This outfit is also another one of my faves !!! The lovely hue of the blue maxi skirt paired with a leopard print cardigan- you cannot go wrong with that ! The gold harware on the purse matches the lovely bracelets and watch. The peacock feather necklace is a beautiful addition to this outfit, however you can chose your own desired necklace to complete the look.

green maxi skirt combined with a horizontal pink striped top
This look is absolutely my favorite maxi skirt pairing! The green maxi skirt combined with a horizontal pink striped top makes for an awesome color pallete. The green in the skirt really balances out the bold stripe in the top. The light pink pump and necklace pull the look together brilliantly. A neutral brown purse is perfect for this outfit!

grey jersey maxi skirt Dress is worn with a black long sleeve top and a faux fur vest
In case you thought maxi skirts are just for summer - here is how you can wear a maxi skirt in the winter. This grey jersey maxi skirt is worn with a black long sleeve top and a faux fur vest takes this look into winter mode. The top could have been in a bright color to make it more interesting. However the designer of this outfit has opted for a neutral color pallete and that works as well.
