In the first segment of this article, we covered basic fabrics that have been derived from natural sources like plants and animals. In this second part we continue our classification of fabrics, however now we focus on man made fibres. For our purposes, I keep the scope limited to fabrics that are commonly used in India for traditional outfits. If I have missed something, please let me know. I will gladly add any suggestions.
BROCADE
Brocade is usually a silk and it typically has some kind of floral pattern on it. In India, there are many stores that sell brocade silk saris. Also, beautiful salwar kameez combos can be made using this fabric. It has a rich and luxurious look not only when its stitched into a garment, but also when its just a piece of fabric.
BUCKRAM
Buckram is a type of stiff material that is either cotton or linen. It is used for inner lining or to give a stiff shape to another wise loose or slouchy material. It is used inside collars and the bottoms of salwars in order for them to retain their shape.
CHIFFON
Chiffon is a thin dyeable fabric that when observed under a microscope looks like its made f a thin mesh net. It is often used in saris, to make the sleeves, or for any clothing part where a delicate look is desired.
CRAPE/CREPE
Crape is another thin textile that has a crimpled up look to it like tiny folds all over. It can ne hard or soft and can be made from eithe silk, polyester or wool. Throughout India crape is used for all sorts of traditional apparel.
DUPION
Dupion is a type of silk that is availble in many different colors. Its called dupion because its made from silk that is threaded from double cocoons. Dupion silk sarees are very popular in India.
GEORGETTE
Georgette falls in the same family as crape. It is a sheer, lightweight, and bouncy fabric that can be dyed into many different colors. It is used very commonly in clothes and drapes becuase it can be easily imprinted by many patterns.
LAWN
Lawn is a silky smooth light cloth that is used in the summer. It is made primarily from cotton and comes heavily printed.
